Those are O-rings. I bought a box full of different sizes in my local hardware store, it has been very useful for different projects! If you want to purchase a specific size only, I would suggest eBay.

Which locomotive is it? If it is the Hectorrail 141, I suggest to divide the main body not in the center but a bit off-center so that the joint is not at the same position as the joint of the chassis.
